Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease destroying insulin-producing beta cells, requiring lifelong exogenous insulin. Cell replacement therapy using stem cell-derived islet cells represents a potential functional cure. Vertex acquired ViaCyte to combine its VX-880 program with ViaCyte encapsulation device technology, advancing toward implantable cell therapy that could eliminate insulin dependence.
VX-880 demonstrated proof-of-concept with patients achieving insulin independence after stem cell-derived islet infusion, but requires immunosuppression.
