Mixed — partial payoff, real shortfalls.

Sanofi and Rhone-Poulenc are connected through corporate lineage rather than a direct acquisition between the two. Rhone-Poulenc merged with Hoechst in 1999 to form Aventis; in 2004, Sanofi-Synthelabo acquired Aventis -- initially through a hostile bid valued at roughly EUR 48.5 billion and ultimately agreed as a friendly merger -- to create Sanofi-Aventis, then the world's third-largest pharmaceutical group. No standalone transaction in which Sanofi acquired Rhone-Poulenc took place.
