Roche and Foundation Medicine entered a broad strategic collaboration for companion diagnostics and molecular information services. Roche acquired a 56.3% ownership stake in Foundation Medicine for $50/share ($1.03B) and the companies agreed to co-develop next-generation companion diagnostics and molecular profiling products. This licensing/partnership deal gave Roche access to FMI's genomic profiling platform for drug development. Roche later acquired the remaining shares in 2018.

Foundation Medicine pioneered comprehensive genomic profiling for cancer, analyzing 300+ genes from a single sample. FoundationOne CDx became the first FDA-approved pan-tumor companion diagnostic.
FoundationOne CDx competes with Caris Life Sciences' MI Tumor Seek, Guardant360 CDx (tissue/liquid biopsy), Tempus xT, Illumina TruSight Oncology 500 (TSO 500), and Memorial Sloan Kettering's MSK-IMPACT assay. Thermo Fisher's Oncomine Dx Target Test targets select gene panels for NSCLC companion diagnostic use.
