Pharmacia & Upjohn and Monsanto merged in a $27 billion stock-for-stock merger of equals, creating Pharmacia Corporation with a combined market capitalization exceeding $50 billion. Each Pharmacia share was exchanged for 1.19 shares and each Monsanto share for 1 share of the new entity. The agricultural division was later spun off as a separate Monsanto.
