Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is a chronic autoimmune disease in which T-cell-mediated destruction of pancreatic beta cells leads to absolute insulin deficiency, lifelong exogenous insulin dependence, and elevated risk of microvascular (retinopathy, nephropathy, neuropathy) and macrovascular complications.
