Boehringer Ingelheim acquired Texas-based (Arlington) Abexxa Biologics, gaining its TCR-like (TCR-mimetic) antibody platform that targets intracellular cancer-specific proteins presented as peptide-HLA complexes on the tumor surface, including the non-classical MHC class I molecule HLA-E. The lead program disrupts the NKG2A:HLA-E immune checkpoint axis. The transaction extended a relationship begun in 2016, when Boehringer Ingelheim Venture Fund provided Abexxa's seed financing. Financial terms were not disclosed; Boehringer stated the deal comprises an upfront payment, milestones and other consideration payments. The lead candidate (ABX002, an HLA-E modulator / NKG2A antagonist) remains preclinical as of mid-2026, with no registered clinical trials.
