Genentech (a member of the Roche Group) and Adaptimmune entered a strategic collaboration on September 8, 2021 to research, develop and commercialize allogeneic (off-the-shelf) T-cell therapies against up to five shared cancer targets, plus personalized allogeneic T-cell programs. Adaptimmune received $150M upfront and was eligible for up to $150M in additional payments over five years, with total potential value exceeding $3B in development, regulatory and commercial milestones plus royalties. On April 12, 2024 Adaptimmune disclosed that Genentech had terminated the collaboration in its entirety (notice received on/around April 10, 2024; effective 180 days later, ~October 2024) while the allogeneic and personalized programs were still in discovery. Adaptimmune realized only the $150M upfront plus roughly $35M in milestone payments of the >$3B potential, and refocused on its late-stage autologous pipeline — afami-cel (TECELRA) won FDA accelerated approval on August 2, 2024 for synovial sarcoma, though that asset was not part of the Genentech collaboration.
