Novartis acquired Chiron Corporation for $48 per share ($5.4 billion) in an all-cash transaction, gaining a leading vaccines business, blood testing operations (with Gen-Probe), and a biopharmaceuticals pipeline. Novartis had held a 42% stake in Chiron since 1994.
