A $450M diagnostics acquisition that looked modest until COVID hit. BioFire's FilmArray multiplex PCR system became the gold standard for syndromic respiratory testing, and revenue surged past $1B during the pandemic—turning bioMerieux's molecular unit into its fastest-growing segment.
bioMerieux acquired BioFire Diagnostics (formerly Idaho Technology) for $450 million plus approximately $35 million in net debt (EUR 355 million total). BioFire's FilmArray multiplex PCR system, which integrates sample preparation, amplification, detection and analysis into one device, became a cornerstone of bioMerieux's syndromic diagnostics strategy.
40M US cases/yr · $2.8B Global Syndromic Diagnostics Market (2014)
Respiratory infections (influenza, RSV, bacterial pneumonia, etc.) are among the most common reasons for ED visits and hospitalizations. Traditional culture-based diagnosis took 24-72 hours. BioFire's FilmArray Respiratory Panel could identify 20+ pathogens from a single nasopharyngeal swab in ~1 hour, transforming point-of-care syndromic testing.
BioFire pioneered the syndromic multiplex PCR category, with FilmArray competing against Luminex (xTAG), Nanosphere (Verigene), and emerging rapid PCR systems. The acquisition proved extraordinarily prescient: BioFire grew from ~$100M revenue at acquisition to become bioMerieux's largest growth driver, and the COVID-19 pandemic (2020) made syndromic respiratory testing a multi-billion dollar market. FilmArray is now installed in >30,000 sites globally.
